Young Creatives

Young Creatives is a friendly place for people ages 13 – 17 to explore all things ‘behind the scenes’ at a theatre!

What is Young Creatives?

A friendly place to explore all things ‘behind the scenes’ at a theatre! This is an opportunity to try new things, make new friends, and see shows together.

Join us twice a month to take part in fun, interactive workshops exploring ‘behind the scenes’ elements of theatre. The first workshop of the month will focus on one of the following areas:

  • Set design
  • Technical theatre
  • Props and costume
  • Theatre directing

The Northern Stage team and guest artists will give you a basic introduction to each of these areas, with an opportunity to try an activity in each discipline.

The second workshop of each month will be a creative and social session with fun crafts, games, and activities.

This is an entry-level group for anyone curious about learning what goes on in a theatre while meeting new people, trying new things, and getting creative – no experience needed!

Who can take part?

Young Creatives is aimed at people aged 13-17 living in the North East.

This is an entry level group, which means you don’t need any experience at all in theatre to take part, you don’t even need to have been to a theatre before!

This group is for people who want to find out more without committing to a full course – you’ll get a no-pressure introduction to what goes on in a theatre, with the opportunity to get creative and make some friends along the way.

As places for this group are limited, we will prioritise applications from young people who have not previously had the opportunity to take part in similar activities or may experience barriers to engaging with the arts. We recognise the underrepresentation that exists within our sector, and we’re committed to breaking down barriers to entry and one of the ways we strive to achieve this is through our Young Creatives Programme. We therefore welcome and strongly encourage applicants from all backgrounds, regardless of disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, and any other protected characteristic to apply to get involved.

If you’ve got a bit of experience with theatre, you might prefer to take a look at one of our courses such as Young Designers, Young Directors or Young Technicians which all go further in depth into the areas covered in this group.

When is it?

The dates for the upcoming sessions are:

  • Tuesday 6th January – 4-5.30pm
  • Tuesday 20th January – 4-5.30pm
  • Tuesday 3rd February – 4-5.30pm
