Abigail’s Party
by Mike Leigh

Beverly, the queen of suburbia, is hosting a cocktail party.
Next door, 15-year-old Abigail is throwing a party of her own.
No one can stop talking about Abigail’s party. No one can stop thinking about Abigail’s party.
Something must be done about Abigail’s party.

Welcome to Mike Leigh’s cult-classic comedy – prepare to see it like never before.
This is the party to end all parties, and you’re all invited. Please RSVP.

The Role

The Role

Northern Stage is recruiting for an experienced Sound Designer to work with Director Jack Bradfield for his inventive new take on Mike Leigh’s classic comedy, Abigail’s Party. They will work closely with the Creative Team and Northern Stage staff to deliver a sound design that helps bring this show to life – in line with the director’s vision – on our midscale Stage 1 and across its tour.

In line with our commitment to the region we serve, we want to use this opportunity to meet practitioners from or based in the North-East of England only.

By our definition, the North-East of England comprises: Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool, Durham, Darlington, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland.

This is a paid role.

Final design presentation will take place w/c 24 June 2024
Rehearsals will run from 12 August 2024 to 7 September 2024 at Northern Stage’s rehearsal facilities in Newcastle.
Technical rehearsals will take place w/c 9 September 2024.
Previews will run from 13 September 2024 with press night on 18 September 2024.

There will also be additional preparatory work to be arranged with the Director & Designer.

Please register your interest by sending your CV to producer@northernstage.co.uk along with a sample of your sound work.

Artists should also complete our Equalities Monitoring Form.

The deadline for expressions of interests is 10am on Friday 17 May 2024.
We will contact practitioners by 22 May 2024 to let them know if they have been shortlisted.
Shortlisted practitioners will meet with the Director in w/c 27 May 2024.
We will be in contact with all applicants regarding the outcome of the process by 7 June 2024.

Hiring Priorities

Northern Stage has a range of hiring priorities, which we consider as part of any appointment to ensure we’re delivering the change we’re committed to seeing in Northern Stage, in the region we serve, and in the theatre sector.

These priorities include:
• In line with our efforts to build a more diverse and representative theatre industry, we are particularly interested in hearing from Disabled practitioners, practitioners from the Global Majority, and/or practitioners from Working Class/Lower Socio-Economic Backgrounds.
• Northern Stage productions are built with the contemporary North-East in mind, and we are therefore particularly interested in hearing only from artists from or based in the North- East of England for this role.
• As part of SCALE UP, our talent development programme supporting artists on a journey of scale, we are committed to employing artists on all of our productions who are making their midscale debuts. We welcome applications from experienced artists who are ready to take this step.
• To ensure that we share opportunities with the widest possible range of artists, generally, we do not employ artists in the same role, more than once in a 12-month period.
