Beauty and the Beast casting call: Beauty
We’re looking for actors who are local to Newcastle – performers who live no further than 25 miles from Northern Stage (NE1 7RH) and rehearsal room (NE6 2AT).
They would need to be completely available for the dates which are:
27th October to 3rd January 2026.
To submit your client / yourself please email info@jmcasting.net with a CV and photo stating where you’re based by Friday 25th July.
We want to create a vibrant, playful world of characters that has plenty of fun and silliness, loads of magic and also the ability to move people in moments.
Therefore, the actors will need to be brilliant collaborators, story tellers, up for playing and multi-rolling at times and comfortable with physical work. Some of them will need to interact directly with the audience too.
The framing device of the play means that they are a theatre company putting on a production of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Therefore, this gives us an opportunity to cast a really dynamic, diverse group of people.
BEAUTY
Described in the play simply as “our heroine.” We really want to portray Beauty as someone that is far more than her name suggests. What even is Beauty anyway? She’s brave, intelligent, witty, strong-willed and also not perfect. She has a stubbornness to her and can sometimes be ill-tempered. She wants adventure from the world and part of the story is her learning more about herself outside of her family experience and upbringing. She is more likely to enjoy a kick about in the park with friends than dressing up for a prom. She loves nature, being outside and enjoying the wonders the world has to offer. Her name is possibly an irritant or a burden to her. She has a very sweet tooth. Alongside her vivacity, sits a sadness too. She misses her Mother and this sits deeply within her. She has a tricky relationship with her sister in particular, and they can be cruel to each other.
Actor – playing age late teens to twenties. A sparkle in the eye and an ability to play all sides of Beauty’s personality. Comfortable with singing a simple song.

BEAST
Described in the play as a “sad and frightened character.” He was a boy before a curse got put upon him, condemning him to live in the form of a beast until he is truly loved. Over the years he has somewhat surrendered to his form, and his humanity has therefore been pushed down – but it is still there. He has endured a lonely existence and is not used to company – no matter how much he may internally crave it. Even before his transformation to a Beast, he experienced loneliness. He wasn’t shunned in society, but his Mother was a Queen waging wars and he was often left at the palace to his own devices. He is musical and curious, but these traits have been lying dormant. For the majority of the play he is caught between sustaining his Beast form and feeling hopelessness that the curse will ever lift and a natural caring and sweet human nature. The actor will also play George – the young man revealed after the curse is lifted.
Actor – playing age late teens to twenties. Very strong with physical work and movement. The part will require a significant costume element and they will have to work out how to move as a Beast. This could involve hand held sticks to portray this creature. Agile and dynamic mover who can communicate story physically.

Beauty and the Beast casting call: Lettuce/Rabbit
We’re looking for actors who are local to Newcastle – performers who live no further than 25 miles from Northern Stage (NE1 7RH) and rehearsal room (NE6 2AT).

LETTUCE / RABBIT
Described in the play as Beauty’s “unfortunate sister.” I think Lettuce is somewhat misunderstood – certainly by her own family. She is young and immature and at the beginning of the play she seems to be charmed by the idea of nice things and pretty dresses. But she is so much more than this. She hasn’t yet found her people or her purpose. She doesn’t enjoy a close relationship with her sister, and there is a sequence when both Beauty and their Father aren’t being particularly nice to her. However, by the end, her Father realises he perhaps should give her more credit. We find out that she goes onto have a rich and interesting life as an explorer and published wildlife writer. Her and Beauty haven’t yet worked out that they have this shared love of the natural world and adventure. She is funny and so the actor should be able to have a handle on comic timing and enjoy playing her as both her immature and slightly more evolved self.
This part also doubles with Rabbit.
Described in the play as “a helpful mute” Rabbit assists Man in Pink and Cecile with the setting up of the fairytale – perhaps a magicians assistant of sorts. However, in the end they are the only character left and have a mischievous side to them. Perhaps they are the next leader of the theatre company? This part also doubles with Lettuce. They will be wearing a Rabbit costume (including head) and so must be comfortable with working physically and being expressive in the body to communicate story.
Actor – playing age late teens to early twenties.

Beauty and the Beast casting call: Father

FATHER
Described in the play as Beauty’s “even more unfortunate Father.” He’s a man who’s been down on his luck for a while. He lost his wife, his business collapsed and it is then because of him that Beauty ends up stuck in the palace with a Beast. He loves his daughters, but perhaps under-estimates them or pigeon holes them in the way he sees them. It seems he has more fondness for Beauty rather than Lettuce. Arguably, he isn’t the strongest character under pressure, and doesn’t put up as much fight as we might expect to stop Beauty going into the palace. He’s tired and becomes unwell during the piece. However, by the end he realises that both of his daughters have great qualities and he ends up living a nice quiet life in a cottage by the river and meeting a fisherwoman who goes on to be his wife. He carries some comedic dialogue and also has a sequence where he is onstage alone and so the actor should be able to carry this.
Actor – playing age Forties. Comfortable with singing a simple song.

Beauty and the Beast casting call: Pink
We’re looking for actors who are local to Newcastle – performers who live no further than 25 miles from Northern Stage (NE1 7RH) and rehearsal room (NE6 2AT).

27th October to 3rd January 2026.

PINK
Described in the play as “our narrator.” Pink is our compere for the evening. They lead the theatre company and takes us through the story. They have panache, charisma but perhaps belongs to a time gone by. Whilst they are a skillful story teller and magician, they are a very flawed character, and is arguably the “villain” of the piece. They are cruel and sharp to his assistant Cecile, and doesn’t appreciate her or those around them. This cruelty is powered by the fact that they are actually the fairy that fell in love with George and was humiliated when they expressed their love. Therefore they put the curse on George and transformed him into a Beast that would only be broken when someone fell in love with him. They were a character that was bullied for the way they looked. In terms of gender, they are a creature and gender isn’t important or significant. Ideally, someone who is gender non-conforming or gender-fluid. They do a lot of audience interaction and should be an exceptional story-teller.
Actor – playing age – They’re a fairy so we could look at a whole range of ages! Mid-thirties and up most likely. At this stage, any gender, but someone who can be playful with their gender expression. Comfortable with singing a simple song. Bonus if they can play an instrument. Up for learning a few magic tricks.

Beauty and the Beast casting call: Cecile

CECILE
Described in the play as Pink’s “French assistant.” She is also a fairy and one of our key narrators. She has rather an unfortunate time as lots of things go wrong as they are presenting the show. She has a difficult relationship with the Man in Pink. He is disparaging of her and she has to put up with a lot of rudeness, but she is also able to give it back and stands up for herself. She is witty, loyal and loves the French roots of the story. Ultimately it is her that keeps the show going until the end. Throughout the play she wants to sing a song that has been promised to her, and Man in Pink keeps delaying this. Eventually she does, but it doesn’t go down well with him! She performs some magic in the show too. She interacts with the audience and helps orchestrate the story, physically assisting in creating the world off the fairytale. She is involved with comedic story beats, especially when things don’t go to plan.
Actor – playing age – again there’s a range here as she’s a fairy! Mid-30’s and up though. Ideally French/French speaking. Comfortable with singing a simple song and up for learning a few magic tricks. Comfortable with physical work.
