A co-production with Northern Stage, ETT (English Touring Theatre), Shakespeare North Playhouse and Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg.
A struggling and divided nation, tearing itself apart. So, when the Macbeths see their chance at the crown, why shouldn’t they take it?
But things don’t go according to plan. Dreams quickly turn to nightmares, humanity erodes, nature stirs. As society strives to make sense of the darkness that sits inside it, how long will it take for people to fight back against the endless cycle of violence and corruption?
A visceral and contemporary new production that speaks to a world we find ourselves living in now and asks why has Macbeth haunted our fears and nightmares for centuries? What lesson is this cautionary tale still urgently trying to communicate to us?

Workshop for teachers
Teaching Macbeth: Witches, Blood, Bodies workshop
Wed 27 Sep, 5.30-7pm at Northern Stage
Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a play of the senses – the play’s characters are haunted by visions of daggers and ghosts, the smell of blood, cries at night, and the ‘filthy air’ of Scotland’s witchy heaths. This 90-minute interactive workshop explores how to engage GCSE and A Level students with the play’s language, and relevant theatrical, literary and cultural contexts, through multi-sensory exploration. In so doing, it invites you to examine how Shakespeare draws on ideas of home and family, real-life witch trials, and ‘true crime’ murder cases, to create what Thomas De Quincey called the ‘peculiar awfulness’ of Macbeth.
This workshop is primarily aimed at GCSE and A Level English Literature teachers, but is open to all (including Drama teachers and teachers of years 7-9), delivered by BBC Radio 4 New Generation Thinker and Newcastle University Lecturer Dr Emma Whipday.
There will be snacks and drinks provided. People can book for the show separately if they want to attend afterwards.
