Young Company: Creators

Using play and exploration, our Young Company Creators make creative work that interacts with the world and young people’s place within it.

Together we explore what we want to say about the world, who we want to say it to, how we want to say it, and who we’d like to work with to make this happen.

We share what we make with audiences at Northern Stage and beyond.

We might use theatre, film, performance art, spoken word, dance, or music – that’s up to you to decide. However we do it, this is the place to discover, express yourself, make friends, and be heard.

The world is a tricky place to navigate, let’s do it together!

Young Company Creators is completely free to take part in. Some travel bursaries are available, and food/snacks will be provided at sessions.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUNG COMPANY?

We’ve been doing a mixture of acting and writing workshops and we are producing a play at the end. We are going to perform at Northern Stage and at an acting festival in June. We started by developing our characters through movement and then writing and we’re basically mushing all the characters together to form one big play. And it’s gorg!

LEWIS

WHAT ARE YOU ENJOYING ABOUT YOUNG COMPANY?

I like the fact that people all come together for the same thing and that they want to make a difference and show the positivity and creativity  that people have inside them.

AME

WHY DID YOU JOIN YOUNG COMPANY?

I joined because my parents told me to get out the house and make some more friends and I’ve done Theatre before (I’ve done a GCSE). I was considering it for A-Level but I didn’t end up picking it and I missed it, so I’ve come back.

LAURENCE

WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN YOUNG COMPANY AT THE MOMENT?

Currently after some major character development and a bit of story development we will be making a play.

ELLA

WHAT ARE YOU MOST ENJOYING?

All the friends that are there, there’s lots of really cool people.

GEORGE

WHAT ARE YOU ENJOYING?

Everything, the dynamics, just experiencing this with new people and people who are experienced in the industry. It’s an opportunity that I wouldn’t get anywhere else. Devising and helping devise this piece is a very enjoyable experience.

RIVER

WHY ARE YOU TAKING PART IN YOUNG COMPANY?

I’m taking part because I think it’s a really nice opportunity to meet new people and to just gain more experience acting.

SAM

WHY DID YOU JOIN YOUNG COMPANY?

I want to be a stunt man and I need stage time to apply to a stunt register.

WHAT ARE YOU ENJOYING ABOUT YOUNG COMPANY SO FAR?

Learning more about production and seeing how things work behind the scenes.

MATHILDA

WHAT ARE YOU ENJOYING ABOUT YOUNG COMPANY?

I’m enjoying the togetherness. I’ve done other drama groups before and people never really involved me because I’m not that much of a group talker. Here, I feel fully involved.

WHY DID YOU JOIN?

My Auntie saw it and brought up that it may be a good thing for me because I’m very about activism and rights and that’s what the topics were originally.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEBODY THINKING OF JOINING YOUNG COMPANY?

I’d say just give it a go because you never know what something is like unless you do it.

MARTHA

WHAT ARE YOU ENJOYING ABOUT YOUNG COMPANY?

I really like being able to work with people with similar interests to me. A lot of my friends don’t enjoy theatre as they think it’s quite a niche, weird thing to be a part of so to be able to work with people who have the same ideas and passion as me is a really great thing. I feel like I’m finding my people more and more as I grow up.

This is also going to help me with my university course (going to study Theatre & Performance at Northumbria University) and it’s helping me develop skills that I didn’t know I possessed. This is exactly the kind of thing I like to be involved in because I’ve got a lot of ideas and to contribute those with people who also have great ideas is really quite fun!

Lily

Why did you join young company?

To get some theatre experience.

What are you enjoying about young company?

The artistic freedom you get and you get to make your own decisions on how you like certain things, which I like.

Dani

Why did you join young company?

I joined young company so I could get more experience as an actor and I just wanted to be in a play. Young Company seemed to offer what I was looking for.

What are you enjoying about young company?

Everyone is really inviting and bring forward their own unique ideas, which I seem to bounce off of really well so I get on with everyone. And also I haven’t had the chance to devise a full play ever, so that new experience is something that I value a lot.

Rhys

Why are you taking part in the young company?

Because I was coming out of Covid and was looking for more opportunities as an actor. I saw it as a great opportunity to make more friends in the industry, or friends in general and also to work with Northern Stage, which is something I haven’t been able to do before. It was a great way through the door.

What are you enjoying so far?

I enjoy the freeness of it, the ability to express things quite well, the ability to talk about issues in other areas would be too taboo or be touched on. It’s really nice that everyone can have their own independent voice.

Lewis C

Why did you join young company?

My best friend told us about it and invited us to come with him and I’ve just started coming here ever since. It has been really fun, everyone is inviting. As soon as you open the door everyone’s like “aw hi, or good morning” – it’s really good.
