A group of young people who took part in Tech Club

Tech Club

Tech Club is a fun introduction to the world of technical theatre for 13 to 17 year olds.

What is Tech Club?

Tech Club is a fun introduction to the world of technical theatre for 13 to 17 year olds.

You will be introduced to light, sound, special effects, and stage management. You’ll get the chance to try out different backstage roles in our professional theatre space and will learn from our experienced technical team.

If you’re curious about what goes on behind the scenes in a theatre but don’t know where to start, this is the perfect opportunity to start exploring.

Tech Club Spring 2025

Over 8 weeks, our brilliant group of aspiring technicians were introduced to the exciting world of technical theatre. Here’s a glimpse at what they’ve been up to:

• Explored taster workshops in sound, lighting, stage and stage management – all led by our expert tech team
• Got hands-on with equipment including rigging lights, flying bars, programming light and sound desks, making props… even using pyrotechnics!
• Practised backstage skills like marking out a set design, exploring ‘The Book’, and calling cues from a prompt copy
• Discovered the wide range of careers that make live theatre possible

A huge round of applause to our participants for their enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity — you’ve been amazing!

When is it?

Tech Club has now finished for this academic year and will resume in the Autumn (exact dates tbc). If you’re interested in taking part, you can sign up to our mailing list and we will get in touch once we have more information about the next cohort.

Where does it take place?

Most of the sessions will take place at Northern Stage, Barras Bridge, in one of our three stages.

Two of the sessions will take place at our rehearsal rooms in Byker. Please note that participants will need to make their own way to the rehearsal rooms for the sessions.

If you are in receipt of a travel bursary, the amount will be increased for the weeks we are in Byker.

What you’ll do

  • Take part in practical introductory workshops in theatre lighting, sound, special effects and stage management
  • Meet our technical team here at Northern Stage
  • Work together to produce your own technical installation of one of our theatre spaces
  • Attend a performance at Northern Stage
