Northern Stage and National Theatre co-production announced
The cat’s out of the parsonage – our Artistic Director Natalie Ibu’s next show will be a co-production with the National Theatre, opening in London in March 2024 before transferring to Northern Stage later in the year.
Underdog: The Other Other Brontë will be the world premiere of a new play by Sarah Gordon, winner of the 2022 Nick Darke Writer’s Award. The play is an irreverent retelling of the lives of the Brontë sisters, looking behind the legend to tell the story of the sibling power dynamics that shaped their uneven rise to fame.
As well as being the National Theatre debut for both Gordon and Ibu, the show is part of the final season of work from outgoing National Theatre Artistic Director Rufus Norris – and we are pleased to be in such good company, alongside Gecko’s Kin (which some of you have already had the pleasure of watching at Northern Stage earlier this year) as well as a new production of The House of Bernada Alba, directed by Olivier award-winning Rebecca Frecknall, who completed a yearlong Regional Theatres Young Directors Scheme placement with Northern Stage in 2016 – you may remember her excellent production of Zinnie Harris’ Julie.
See here for full details of National Theatre’s upcoming season.
More information about Underdog: The Other Other Brontë will be announced soon. As always, Northern Stage members will find out first!
