CALLOUT: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR for A Song For Ella Grey

by David Almond

adapted for the stage by Zoe Cooper

directed by Esther Richardson

a Pilot Theatre Production in association with Northern Stage and York Theatre Royal.

OPEN CALL: Assistant Director

Claire and her best friend, Ella Grey, are ordinary kids from ordinary families in an ordinary world. They and their friends fall in and out of love, play music and dance, stare at the stars, yearn for excitement, and have parties on the beautiful beaches of Northumberland. One day a stranger, a musician called Orpheus, appears on the beach, and entrances them all but particularly Ella. Where has Orpheus come from and what path will Ella follow? A tale of modern teenagers and ancient forces, a tale told since the dawn of time and told again today. Pilot Theatre is working in collaboration with Northern Stage and York Theatre Royal to bring this magical retelling of the Orpheus myth to the Stage, building a world full of music, sound and storytelling.

We are excited to be recruiting for an Assistant Director to work with director Esther Richardson to bring this production to life for its world premiere in February 2024 on Stage 1 at Northern Stage, and across its subsequent national tour. This is a production deeply rooted in the landscape of the North-East, so for this role we are specifically seeking to work with artists from or based in either the North-East or Pilot Theatre’s North Yorkshire home.

KEY DATES

Rehearsals take place at Northern Stage’s rehearsal space in Newcastle from 2 – 26 January 2024 with technical rehearsals and previews from 29 January 2024 – 6 February 2024, and press night on 7 February 2024.

In addition to this, the assistant director will be expected to support up to three venue moves across the show’s touring period in February/March 2024, with dates to be agreed with the successful candidate.

These will be remunerated at an additional fee, with subsistence payments as relevant.

In addition to these dates, the role will require some prep work to be undertaken in December 2023, as agreed between the successful candidate and the Director.

FEE

£570.28 per week plus expenses/subsistence as appropriate (equivalent to MRSL 2 Assistant Director)
