CALLOUT: MOVEMENT AND CIRCUS DIRECTOR for A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol adapted by Karen Louise Hebden

directed by Natalie Ibu

A Northern Stage Production

Ding, dong, ding, dong, the bells are ringing because Scrooge is coming to Newcastle – and he’s meaner and greedier than ever. Bah Humbug!

Is it too late for Scrooge to change his miserly ways? Can a magical midnight visit to Christmases past, present and future help him to discover the true meaning of Christmas?

Northern Stage’s A Christmas Carol is the story you know and love (complete with all the trimmings) and will warm the hearts of the whole family. The production will feature Set & Costume Designs by Debbie Duru, and Lighting Design by Elliot Griggs, with further creative roles TBA.

The Role

We are looking for a Movement and Circus Director to work with the Director and creative team to re-imagine A Christmas Carol in Epic Space for Christmas 2024.

This could be one person with both skillsets, or two artform specialists that include set choreography as well as an approach to physicality and a range of circus skills – for example, contortion, stilt walking, ariel, acrobatics. This person/these people will work closely with the Director and actors to realise a dynamic physical language for the production across movement and circus skills, surprising and delighting audiences at Northern Stage. It is expected that this practitioner/these practitioners take an inclusive approach that celebrates and collaborates with a range of bodies with different skills and abilities.

Key Dates

Rehearsals will run from 28th October 2024 to 20 November 2024 at Northern Stage’s rehearsal facilities in Newcastle.

Technical rehearsals will take place 21 to 29 November 2024. Previews will run from 30 November to 4 December 2024, with press night on 5 December 2024. Movement and Circus Direction will be required throughout technical rehearsals and previews, and for set periods throughout rehearsal period, to be arranged with the Director.

There will also be some preparation required, to be arranged with the Director.

Practitioners will also be expected to contribute to the casting process in w/c 17 June 2024.

Please register your interest by sending your CV to producer@northernstage.co.uk  along with a 2-5 minute video which you feel is representative of your work. Artists should also complete our Equalities Monitoring Form.

This production is being built with the contemporary North-East in mind, and we are therefore particularly interested in hearing from artists from or based in the North-East of England. Artists in the rest of the UK may also apply.

In line with our efforts to build a diverse and representative theatre industry, we particularly welcome expressions of interest from Disabled practitioners and practitioners from the Global Majority.

Northern Stage is committed to employing artists making their midscale debuts and Northern Stage debuts in a range of roles across our produced work, and we hope to hear from experienced artists ready for these opportunities.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 12 noon on Friday 19 April 2024.

We will contact artists by 26 April 2024 to let them know if they have been shortlisted.

Shortlisted artists will meet with the Director in w/c 20 May 2024.

We will be in contact with all artists regarding the outcome of the process by 29 May 2024.

Required attendance, fees and any necessary expenses to be negotiated with the successful candidate(s).
