Ding, dong, ding, dong, the bells are ringing because Scrooge is coming to Newcastle – and he’s meaner and greedier than ever. Bah Humbug!

Is it too late for Scrooge to change his miserly ways? Can a magical midnight visit to Christmases past, present and future help him to discover the true meaning of Christmas?

Northern Stage’s A Christmas Carol is the story you know and love (complete with all the trimmings) and will warm the hearts of the whole family.

The Role

We are looking for a Deputy Stage Manager to work with us on A Christmas Carol.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting SM with the running of an efficient and safe rehearsal room, ensuring rehearsals run smoothly and that company and creatives are suitably supported
  • With other members of the Stage Management Team, maintain regular and effective communication with the Producer and Director, bringing to them in a timely manner, anything concerning the production, creatives or performing company which may need their attention.
  • To communicate any relevant information to all production staff, including the freelance creative team, through accurate and precise rehearsal notes
  • Liaising with the Director, stage personnel and other technical departments as necessary
  • With the SM and ASM, compiling setting lists for props, furniture and set dressing
  • Compiling and maintaining a clear Prompt Copy and other necessary paperwork throughout rehearsals and technical rehearsals
  • Calling each performance, potentially operating Sound, ensuring that all crew members receive all necessary information at the correct time
  • Compiling accurate and precise show reports and distributing them all concerned parties
  • Keeping timesheets for yourself and the performers, with the CM
  • Where necessary, to participate and assist in Northern Stage’s projects / workshops
  • In conjunction with SM to be aware of Health and Safety issues surrounding performers
  • Attend all rehearsals, production meetings, technical and dress rehearsals and performances as called
  • Take minutes of production meetings and issue to the Production Manager
  • Actively support and promote Northern Stage’s green initiatives and their commitment to achieve the Green Book for Productions Intermediate Standard.
  • Any other duties that may reasonably be requested by Northern Stage and as customarily expected of a Deputy Stage Manager

Person Specification, Knowledge and Experience

  • At least 3 years professional experience, preferably working on mid to large scale productions
  • Experience as a Deputy Stage Manager, calling productions
  • Experience and a good working knowledge of opening new theatrical productions
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Computer literate

Salary: £556.97 per week

Contract Terms: As per the Equity/UK Theatre agreement for Subsidised Managers

Contract Dates: 28/10/2024 – 04/01/2025
